Lisa Brummel ’77

First ever 1,000 point scorer in school history, finishing with 1,248 (in 3 years!) Holds the single game record with 42 points in a single game.

Four Sport athlete at Yale University 1977-1981. 2 Time All Ivy League in basketball. 3rd team NCAA All America.

Current Co-Owner of the Seattle Storm in the WNBA!

Carolyn Center ’95

Starting center on 1995 CIAC Class LL Championship Team 1995 CIAC Class LL State Championship Staples girls basketball team. 3 time All-FCIAC, First Team All-State. 1,278 Career Points, CT Post Female Athlete of the Year 1995. Athletic Bio

Played 4 years at Division 1 Richmond University, earning ALL-CAA and team MVP in 1999.

Played professionally for the Northampton (England) 76ers. Works as the General Manager of Richmond IMG Sports Marketing.

Stefanie Goettsche ’90

Averaged 26 ppg her senior year at Staples, a school record. Finished her career with 1,485 points. Member of FCIAC Championship team in 1990. 1st Team All-State. Went on to play BIG EAST basketball at Providence where she was a 1,000-point scorer for the Friars. Following her time at PC, Stephanie played professionally in Germany for a number of years.

Played 86 games for the German National team from 1994-2002.

Courtney Sutherland ’87

Sutherland holds the career mark at Staples for rebounds, finishing her career with 1,286 points and 1,111 rebounds.

First Team All State 1987, 3 time All-FCIAC. Played college basketball and tennis at St Leo College in Florida.

Karen DeFelice ’82

Averaged a school record 19 rebounds per game in 1982, a record that still stands today. All FCIAC, All State, and played at Providence College. Was a Staples assistant coach for 27 years under Coach Ed Huydic, and a longtime Staples teacher and WEA President!

Ann Claire Roesch ’04

1,000 point scorer, averaged 18 points and 9 rebounds a game as a senior. Was a 3 time All-FCIAC player, and went on to play collegiately at Amherst College. Currently is a Principal at Deloitte Consulting.

Jessica Gelman ’93

3 time All FCIAC. Staples All Time Leading Scorer with 1,636 points. Won 2 FCIAC Championships 1991, 1993. Went on to play collegiately at Harvard where she was also a 1,000 point scorer in the Ivy League. Currently CEO of Kraft Analytics Group, a sports analytical firm in Boston.

Karem Esteva ’95

All time steals leader when she graduated at Staples with 158, and second all-time in assists with 131. MVP of 1995 State Championship game and 1995 FCIAC Championship. Holds school record of 6 steals per game her senior year. Esteva was a Parade All-American soccer player at Staples, named the #1 defender in the nation in soccer. She played soccer collegiately at the University of Virginia where she was named a collegiate All American!

Holds the Staples girls basketball career assists record with 159. Played college soccer at the University of Virginia!

Head Coach Paco Fabian 2014-2024

Paco Fabian coached the Wreckers for 10 seasons, returning the squad to the top of the FCIAC standings during his tenure. His 2020 team is widely recognized as one of the best Staples Girls Basketball teams ever, holding the #1 ranking in the State and advancing to the Class LL semifinals before the season was suspended due to the COVID pandemic. The Wreckers were a favorite to win the state title that year, but didnt get the chance to finish the season.

Fabian was named FCIAC Coach of the year and also had a long run as a State Championship Girls Tennis coach at Staples. Read about Coach Fabian here Fabian changes the culture at Staples

Head Coach Ed Huydic 1979-2014

Ed Huydic is the legendary 34 year coach of Staples Girls Basketball. During his career, he won 4 FCIAC titles and 1 CIAC title (1995). He achieved 28 straight seasons of qualifying for the state tournament. Ed ended his Staples career with 453 career wins, a school record! He currently coaches as an assistant for Fairfield Warde.
